Taxidermist 8‑Point White‑tailed Deer

19th century
Description

Taxidermy 8‑point white‑tailed deer shoulder mount by Anthony Ford, signed on the reverse. A well‑executed piece of taxidermy, displaying a natural, alert expression and a good, even coat. The antlers have a strong, symmetrical formation with eight clean points, giving the mount real presence on the wall.

The craftsmanship is confident and tidy, with well‑set eyes, neatly finished ears and a balanced overall form. A striking decorative addition for a lodge, study or country interior, and a quality example from a known contemporary taxidermist.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A shoulder mount is a method of taxidermy display where the head, neck, and shoulder portion of an animal hide are mounted onto a anatomical form, designed for wall display.

Traditionally, real deer hides are tanned and fitted over a carved wood-wool or polyurethane form, with natural antlers fixed to the underlying skull plate and fitted with glass eyes.

Authentic vintage pieces feature historic mounting techniques such as hand-stitching along the rear seam, glass eyes set with plaster or putty, and natural wear patterns on the hide and antler bases.

A deer mount can be positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or on a focal wall, contrasting well with neutral backdrops, dark wood panelling, or contemporary minimalist settings.

Dust the mount regularly using a soft dry cloth or a feather duster following the direction of the hair, keep away from direct sunlight, and maintain low humidity to prevent hair loss.
