Japanese Hibachi

19th century
Description

An exquisitely crafted Japanese hibachi (shichirin), dating from the late Meiji to Taisho period (circa 1890–1920). Fashioned from richly figured Keyaki wood (Japanese Zelkova), the rectangular form houses a metal-lined charcoal basin, traditionally used for heating and boiling water in domestic settings. Surrounding the brazier are multiple drawers with brass handles, thoughtfully arranged to store utensils, fuel, and accessories—balancing utility with aesthetic refinement. The wood displays a deep, warm patina, and the piece is offered in excellent antique condition, with gentle signs of age that enhance its character. This hibachi offers a rare window into pre-modern Japanese daily life, and today serves beautifully as a decorative accent, conversation piece, or repurposed functional object. A compelling choice for collectors, interior stylists, or anyone drawn to craftsmanship with cultural depth.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A traditional Japanese hibachi is a heat-resistant container designed to hold burning charcoal, historically used for space heating, boiling water for tea, or warming food. Often constructed as a wooden box with a metal liner, larger furniture-style hibachi frequently incorporated small drawers for storing tea equipment and charcoal implements.

Authentic wooden hibachi are typically constructed using fine native Japanese timber such as keyaki (zelkova), paulownia, or cypress, frequently highlighted by decorative burl veneers. The inner heating chamber is lined with copper or zinc to safely contain hot ash, while metal corner mounts and drawer pulls are made from iron or bronze.

Authentic pieces display signs of genuine age, such as natural oxidisation on the metal handles, patina within the copper lining, and hand-cut joinery on the wooden casing. Look for traditional metal handle styles, such as warabite bail handles, and structural wear consistent with long-term exposure to ash and heat.

In modern interior design, a wooden hibachi makes a striking focal point when styled on a sideboard or low coffee table. The open copper-lined chamber can be repurposed as a distinctive indoor planter, a catch-all box, or a decorative display vessel for dried botanicals.

Dust the exterior timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, and clean the interior copper lining gently without using abrasive chemical cleaners.
