David Ord Kerr is a British artist with a strong foundation in zoology, botany, and painting. Early in his career, he joined the Wallace Expedition to the Amazon, where he produced detailed scientific drawings for the British Museum. Upon returning to the UK, he trained at the Royal Academy, earning prizes for both anatomical drawing and landscape painting.
Kerr is best known for his exceptional bird paintings. He specialises in highly detailed, anatomically precise depictions of exotic birds, rendered in luminous, jewel-like colours. This approach creates a distinctive realism that feels paradoxically dreamlike in its intensity and vibrancy.
He has undertaken numerous research expeditions, including a return to the Amazon, as well as trips to the Kalahari Desert and the Middle East. Deeply involved in conservation, Kerr has received commissions from the World Wildlife Fund and the sustainable wood fibre company Sappi, for whom he created twelve paintings as part of their 1990 project Kingfishers and Bee Eaters of South Africa.
Based in Norfolk, he is a founder member of the Norfolk Guild of Norwich Painters and has collaborated with the Norfolk Naturalists’ Trust. Kerr has illustrated three field guides to the birds of North America and has exhibited in both the United States and South Africa. Since the 1980s, he has been represented by the Tryon Gallery, where he has held many successful solo exhibitions.
