Framed oil on Panel by the English artist Gerald Ellis - signed and inscribed on the rear. The panel is mounted in a good quality frame and slip.
Gérald Ellis (1920–1998) was a British and European painter best known for his vivid, post-impressionistic, and abstract oil paintings. His diverse portfolio features a strong emphasis on equestrian imagery, coastal views, and European cityscapes. While biographical records regarding his early life and formal education remain sparse, his legacy survives through a consistent footprint in international art auctions. Ellis''s work is characterised by dynamic brushstrokes and a diverse approach that bridged representation with abstraction.
He earned recognition as a prominent figure in 20th-century equestrian painting. His work captured the kinetic speed of horse racing and hunting, seen in pieces like Jockeys au paddock, Jockeys et Chevaux, and Chasse ŕ courre. He also painted classic European travel destinations, heavily focusing on po...rts, canals, and waterfronts. Notable examples include Canal in Venice, The Old Port of Marseille, and The Port of Honfleur. As well as landscapes, Ellis produced intimate figurative work, including gouache portraits of women from 50''s and 60''s.
