Antique Pitch Pine Open Back Church Pew

1900 - 1920
Description

An arts and crafts style church pew c1900, made from pitch pine with an elegant open back design and shaped sides. There is a little shelf on the rear side hidden under the seat where bibles would have been stored. Ideal for a hallway or as bench seating at a dining table.

Condition: Good solid condition. This had been rather badly stripped when we acquired it - we have re-finished as best we can but there are still some areas that feel a little rough where the grain has been raised, and some darker patches, mainly on the seat.

Pitch pine became a favoured timber for church and chapel furnishings throughout the nineteenth century due to its strength, straight grain, and resinous durability. Open-backed pews were frequently specified to reduce material costs while providing sturdy seating for large congregations.

Traditional church benches were built using heavy-section timber assembled with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The side frames, or bench ends, were shaped to provide stability, supporting long single-plank seats and continuous top rails.
