Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Pierced "Net" Pattern Serving Dish / Platter

Description

A large and heavy Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transferware Serving Dish or Platter printed in a rich medium blue palette in the "Net" pattern. According to Volume I of Coysh & Henrywood's "Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780 - 1880", this pattern is known to have been used by at least four potters, viz. Herculaneum, Job Ridgway, Spode and possibly Charles Tittensor of Shelton. We believe that this piece, the reverse of which bears the mark, "Ironstone China" on a ribbon within a floral cartouche, was probably potted in Liverpool at the Herculaneum pottery. FAQs

Georgian blue and white transferware refers to pottery produced in Britain between 1714 and 1837 using a decorative copper-plate printing process. Copper plates were engraved with designs, inked with cobalt blue pigment, and transferred onto paper before being applied to the unglazed ceramic body.

Pierced or reticulated ceramics were created by manually cutting geometric shapes out of the damp clay body using specialised punch tools prior to the initial firing. The piece was subsequently printed, glazed, and fired a second time to seal the openwork edges.

Authentic Georgian examples typically feature a bluish lead glaze pooled around foot rims, stilt marks from kiln firing, slight misalignment in transfer seams, and a softer pearlware or creamware body beneath the glaze.

Transferware platters can be displayed vertically on plate stands atop sideboards, grouped together on accent walls using plate hangers, or arranged flat on dining tables as foundational centerpieces.

Clean transferware using warm water and mild liquid detergent applied with a non-abrasive sponge. Avoid immersion if the piece exhibits crazing or prior repairs, and never subject antique ceramics to dishwashers or micro-wave heating.
