This is a superb and rare early 19th-century Dutch Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting depicting a nocturnal interior scene with a pretty maid sitting by an open fire with her arms stretched forward to enjoy the heat.
Godfried (or Godfrey) Schalcken (1643–1706) was a highly acclaimed Dutch Golden Age painter famous for his masterful use of chiaroscuro and artificial candlelight. Associated with the Leiden fijnschilders (fine painters), he is remembered for his highly polished technique, intimate genre scenes, and as the inspiration for a classic Gothic ghost story.
The beautiful image is full of period charm.
The piece is mounted within the original, spectacular quality Dutch ripple-moulded ebonised frame, retaining the original presentation plaque with Godfried's details.

Condition:
Both the painting and the frame are offered in an overall good original condition.
Upon closer inspection of the frame, there are a handful of areas with veneer loss that have since been touched in.
These minute imperfections do not detract from the overall stunning appearance, and are mentioned more so for accuracy.
