Antique Luri Tribal Carpet. 316cm X 160cm.

19th century
Description

Lur tribes,fars province,south west persia,last quarter 19th century.

Either by the boyer ahmadi or the mamasani.

This particular three medallion design surrounded in ivory with animal heads with the coloured dots representing the eyes. There is a similar example in tribal rugs, james opie, page 118, colour plate 7.16 &7.17 and page 128,colour plate 7.28,the latter suggesting a mid 19th century date though this example around 1880-1890.

My example is filled with tribal motifs and in particular the peacock motif drawn in five different distinctive styles which I thought was highly imaginative of the weaver plus a couple of animal forms, stylised plants, many s-shaped motifs and the more usual octagons and geometric shapes.

Sides later rebound and ends secured. There is a few scattered repairs, one to the left side edge, one to the right side barbers pole and a hard to see one right side of the central blue medallion, everything imaged.

That said it is priced accordingly and for its large size.

10 foot 5 inches by 5 foot 3 inches. 316cm X 160cm. At widest points. All wool construction with the wefts dyed terracotta.

Note; luri rugs are emerging from decades of neglect to assume a significant place in the study of iranian tribal rugs. They represent an exciting frontier for scholars and collectors whose interests and tastes lean toward authentic nomadic work.

Now selling a range of authentic nomadic luri/afshar/qashqai and khamseh weavings from south and west persia.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Luri carpets are hand-woven textiles created by nomadic and semi-nomadic Luri tribes in western Iran. They are characterised by bold geometric devices, multi-diamond medallions, stylized flora or fauna, and vibrant colour palettes derived from natural dyes.

Traditionally woven entirely from hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundations, these carpets utilize symmetrical or asymmetrical hand-knotting techniques. The wool is dyed using plant and mineral sources to produce rich reds, dark blues, and ochre tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit flexible wool foundations, minor variations in pattern symmetry inherent to tribal weaving, and natural colour abrash or shading. The underside clearly displays exposed hand-knotted weave structures rather than uniform machine backing.

A geometric tribal carpet serves as an anchoring focal point in minimalist, eclectic, or contemporary settings. Its complex pattern balances modern plain-upholstered seating, while its warm tones complement natural timber floors and neutral wall palettes.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar prevents fibre damage and dirt buildup. Professional hand-washing using non-alkaline wool detergents is recommended every few years, along with periodic rotation to ensure even wear.
