Omersa Workshop Liberty's Leather Footstool Pig

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderfully characterful vintage leather pig, crafted in the distinctive Liberty of London tradition. The first Omersa pigs were crafted in 1927. Made from rich brown hide with hand‑stitched seams, this charming piece shows the gentle wear and patina that only decades of handling and display can create.

The body is traditionally stuffed with straw and sawdust, giving it that authentic, slightly firm feel associated with early Liberty leather animals. The form is full and well‑balanced, with neatly modelled ears, snout, and tail, all stitched with the careful, slightly naïve workmanship collectors adore.

Equally at home as a decorative accent, a whimsical footstool, or a talking point in a country‑house interior, this is a delightful example of British leathercraft with real personality.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First crafted in the early 20th century, full-grain leather animal footstools were popularised in Britain through retailers such as Liberty of London. Handcrafted using internal steel frames and wood wool stuffing, these sculptural items combined utility with playful form.

These footstools are constructed around a rigid internal frame filled with compacted wood wool or pine shavings. The exterior consists of hand-stitched grain leather dyed and waxed to create a durable, structured shape.

Authentic examples feature hand-stitched seams, full-grain leather with a natural patina, folded leather ears, and blind-embossed maker marks or brass eyelets. Structural weight and dense internal fill are also key indicators of genuine craftsmanship.

Position the piece near a hearth, beside an armchair, or in an empty corner to add texture and character. It functions both as an accent seat or footrest and as a sculptural decorative object within traditional or eclectic spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a neutral leather conditioner periodically to prevent drying or cracking. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to preserve the natural finish.
