Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French credenza is a structured side cabinet featuring decorative wood veneers, often embellished with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and topped with fitted marble. Popularised during the Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Napoleon III eras, these cabinets were designed both for storage and displaying objects behind glazed doors.

These pieces incorporate kingwood or rosewood veneers arranged in parquetry patterns, topped with shaped marble slabs. High-end examples feature gilded bronze mounts and cast brass mouldings framing glazed door panels.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display thick hand-cut veneers, cast-bronze mounts secured with hand-slotted screws, and natural age lines on solid oak or pine carcass frames. Look for hand-chased details on gilt-bronze fittings and original hand-finished marble edges.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to complement its wood tones and brass details, leaving the marble top clear or decorated with simple ceramics. Its glazed doors provide a showcase for porcelain, books, or glassware.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lift and wood movement. Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, polish gilt bronze gently with a dry soft brush, and seal the marble top to protect against staining.
