Description

A pretty Worcester porcelain dessert serving dish of squared form with deeply lobed rim and fluted walls. Painted with arrangements of "spotted fruit"; apples, plums and a long, green fruit that looks very like a small gherkin type cucumber. Finished with a gilded rim. Unmarked, c.1775. Provenance: The Crane Collection.

It measures 20.3cm (8") wide and 3.2cm (1 1/4") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear. There are two sections of the rim with quite a high concentration of kiln dust spotting causing a surface roughness which the gilding doesn't sit over as neatly as it should. It is possible there has been minor refreshment of the gilt to help even it up but I can't be sure.

First Period Worcester porcelain refers to soft-paste ceramics produced by the Worcester manufacture between 1751 and 1783 under Dr John Wall. These wares are noted for their soapstone-enriched paste, durability under heat, and hand-painted floral, chinoiserie, or fruit motifs.

Eighteenth-century English soft-paste porcelain incorporated ground soapstone combined with clay and frit, fired at lower temperatures than hard-paste porcelain. Decorative elements were applied using hand-painted overglaze enamels and real gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces often exhibit a characteristic greenish tint when held up to light due to the inclusion of soapstone. Marks may include blue underglaze open or filled crescents, fretted square marks, or painter marks on the base.
