Antique English Georgian Bronze Candlestick

18th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A fine and scarce Early 18th Century Antique English Georgian Bronze Candlestick, the knopped octagonal column rising from a stepped foot of complementary design, the socket pierced such that the spent candle stub could be pricked out. This early feature predates the introduction of the internal push-rod ejector which first made an appearance circa 1720, although clearly the use of both methods of removal continued for many years. This attractive example offered here with a warm soft colour and patina. For similar examples, see Chapter 11 of Ronald F. Michaelis : "Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks".

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian candlesticks from the eighteenth century are characterised by cast metal construction, baluster or faceted stems, and stepped, rounded, or octagonal bases.

Most Georgian examples were cast in brass, bronze, paktong, or sterling silver, often featuring hand-chased detailing and seam marks from historical two-part core casting methods.

Authentic pieces typically demonstrate heavy cast weight, subtle surface irregularities, original wax ejector holes near the socket, and accumulated oxidisation in crevices.

Displaying a single period candlestick or an eclectic grouping on a mantelpiece, dining table, or console adds metallic warmth and architectural interest to contemporary decor.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free cloth and avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners to preserve the natural surface patina, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly if protection is required.
