Description

Set of Four English Satin Birch Dining Chairs, Regency / William IV Period

A refined set of four English satin birch dining chairs dating to the late Regency / early William IV period, circa 1820–1835. The chairs are of elegant and well-considered form, with arched top rails centred by carved palmette motifs and further delicate detailing throughout the back rails and splats.

The frames are particularly well drawn, showing a lightness and balance typical of the period. The turned and tapering front legs show a subtle nod to Gillows-influenced design, while the rear legs are of oval section with a pleasing curved rake, giving both strength and visual refinement.

Constructed in satin birch, a timber widely used in the period to emulate the appearance of satinwood, the chairs display a warm, decorative tone with subtle variation across the frames, consistent with their age and material.

The seats have been recently reupholstered in a neutral fabric which complements the colour of the timber well, allowing the chairs to be used immediately.

A decorative and highly usable set, sitting comfortably between country and more formal Regency taste, making them especially versatile within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency and William IV chairs, dating from approximately 1810 to 1837, are characterised by classical proportions, curved backrails, and delicate carved details, bridging Neo-Classical and early Victorian aesthetics.

High-grade timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, and native exotic woods like satin birch were favoured, often paired with carved accents, traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural textile upholstery.

Authentic pieces from this period typically feature turned or tapered front legs, curved crest rails with foliate carving, visible signs of hand-construction on frame undersides, and natural age-related patination.

Pair light timber chairs with a darker wood or stone dining table to create contrast, or integrate them into a modern neutral scheme where the warm wood tones add historic depth.

Keep timber frames away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply natural wax polish sparingly, and spot-clean upholstery with specialised fabric products.
