Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian papier-mache tea caddies were decorative containers produced during the nineteenth century using compressed paper pulp sealed with multiple layers of black varnish. Originating primarily in English manufacturing centres such as Birmingham and Wolverhampton, these vessels were crafted to store imported tea leaves securely.

Constructors pasted layers of paper onto shaped moulds, which were baked dry and saturated with linseed oil before black lacquering. Decorative embellishments often featured mother-of-pearl shell inlay, gilded paintwork, and occasionally hand-painted floral or landscape motifs.

Authentic items demonstrate age-appropriate surface crazing in the lacquer, subtle wear to the gilding, and substantial weight due to dense paper compression. Original brass hinges, lock plates, and remnants of foil lining inside the compartments also assist in identifying period pieces.

A lacquered tea caddy functions well as a decorative accent on a dining room sideboard, hallway console table, or library shelf. Placing it alongside contemporary textured ceramics or framed artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern aesthetic elements.

Store the item away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and humid environments, as moisture causes papier-mache to swell and lacquer to bloom. Dust softly using a clean microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical solvents, furniture polish, or liquid cleaners.
