Description

A fine set of four Aynsley cabinet plates produced in Longton, Staffordshire, in c.1888 and painted by Joseph James Birbeck Junior. Rich cobalt grounds, extensive gilding and carefully executed landscape painting place the set among the finest decorative porcelains produced by the factory during the late Victorian period.

The plates depict Windermere, Bassenthwaite Lake, Loch Leven and Ross Castle, forming a complete Named View series. Such services were created to celebrate recognised beauty spots and reflected the Victorian enthusiasm for travel, landscape and picturesque scenery.

Birbeck was one of the leading English porcelain painters of his generation, working for several important Staffordshire manufacturers including Aynsley and Royal Doulton. His signed landscape subjects remain highly regarded by collectors. Named View services of this quality were produced for the upper end of the Victorian market and were intended for display as much as for use. Complete matching sets seldom survive intact.

The reverse bears the title of each view together with pattern number 2546. The absence of a printed factory mark is entirely consistent with early Aynsley production.

During the late nineteenth century, prominent British porcelain manufacturers produced decorative cabinet plates featuring topographical landscape studies, known as named views. These pieces catered to the Victorian interest in domestic travel and romanticised countryside scenery, intended purely for display rather than functional dining.

These pieces were crafted from fine bone china or soft-paste porcelain, finished with hand-applied overglaze enamels and high-carat gold leaf gilding. Deep cobalt blue glazes were applied to the rims to frame central hand-painted landscape scenes.

Authentic pieces typically bear printed or impressed Aynsley manufacturer marks on the reverse, alongside hand-written titles specifying the painted landscape location. High-quality gilding and fine brushwork in the central medallion are characteristic of production from around 1888.
