A finely decorated Royal Worcester blush ivory pot-pourri jar and cover, produced in England in 1903. The piece is shape number 1720 and belongs to the factory’s classic blush ivory period, combining a sculptural covered form with rich gilding and finely hand-painted floral decoration.
 
The vessel was intended for pot-pourri, a mixture of dried flowers, lavender and aromatic oils used to perfume interiors. In late Victorian and Edwardian homes, such jars were both decorative objects and elegant air fresheners, especially suited to refined drawing rooms and cabinet displays.
 
The soft blush ivory ground is one of Royal Worcester’s most recognisable finishes. It was inspired by the warm tones of carved ivory objects fashionable in the late 19th century and was finished in delicate shaded ivory and blush tones with the distinctive satin surface associated with Worcester production.
