Antique First Empire Brass Mounted Rosewood Console Table

19th century
Description

An elegant early 19th century First Empire console table of architectural form, the green marble top above a frieze with foliate running guilloche brass mounts supported by two fine pillars with further mounts to the tops and bottoms, the lower shelf with beautifully figure rosewood veneer and heightened with another section of brass decoration, the whole raised on four reeded bun feet. France. C.1810 This very small mirror backed console is perfect for any small London town house or apartment. It would look wonderful in a narrow hallway and magnify the space due to the original mirrored back, in fact a small alcove or landing space would be equally suited to such a little gem.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First Empire console tables emerged in early 19th-century France, featuring Neoclassical symmetry, architectural column supports, dark woods such as rosewood or mahogany, and classical brass or bronze mounts inspired by Greco-Roman motifs.

These tables typically feature figured hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, fitted with marble tops, gilt brass or bronze mounts, and secondary wood framing for the lower tier.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved details, genuine brass mounts exhibiting age-appropriate patination, marble tops showing hand-tooling on the underside, and traditional period joinery along the carcass.

Position the table against a prominent wall in an entryway or hallway, paired with a contemporary mirror above, allowing the dark wood grain and marble surface to stand out.

Clean the stone top using a pH-neutral marble cleaner, dust the rosewood frame with a soft dry cloth, apply a natural beeswax sparingly to the timber, and keep the metal mounts free from abrasive polishes.
