Victorian Mahogany Wine Cooler

19th century
Description

A fine Victorian mahogany wine cooler of elegant cylindrical form, raised on cabriole legs terminating in bold ball‑and‑claw feet — a hallmark of 19th‑century design. The richly figured mahogany body lifts to reveal its original copper liner, ideal for keeping wine or bottles cool as intended. A small curved drawer is neatly set into the lower section, adding both charm and practicality. The timber has developed a warm, glowing patina, and the whole piece balances decorative appeal with its original function. A distinctive and beautifully crafted wine cooler, perfect as a statement accent in a dining room or drawing room, and equally attractive used as a planter.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, mahogany wine coolers, often termed cellarettes, were designed to keep wine bottles chilled prior to serving. Positioned in formal dining rooms, these vessels contained ice and lead or brass liners to maintain cool temperatures during meals.

Victorian wine coolers were typically crafted from solid or veneered mahogany, featuring a removable zinc, lead, or brass metal lining to contain ice and moisture. Carved cabriole legs, brass carrying handles, and internal drain plugs were common construction features.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit hand-carved details such as ball-and-claw or cabriole feet, period-correct brass fittings, and signs of natural patination inside the metal insert. Examining drawer construction for hand-cut dovetails and natural wood shrinkage also helps confirm age.

A cylindrical mahogany cellarette works exceptionally well as an unusual occasional table, a planter for indoor greenery, or a dedicated standalone piece in a dining room alcove or home bar setting. The metallic lining makes it a practical vessel for displaying botanical arrangements or holding ice during gatherings.

Keep the timber finish hydrated by applying natural beeswax polish along the mahogany grain, avoiding direct heat sources to prevent wood splitting. Clean the metal liner with a dry or lightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that might strip the natural aged patina.
