Art Deco Octagonal Occasional Table C.1930

1920 - 1940
Description

An Art Deco side table, circa 1930, with an octagonal top and sculptural curved supports. The veneered surface is arranged in a radial pattern, with triangular sections meeting around a circular centre detail and a faceted outer border following the eight-sided outline. The warm golden timber tone and visible grain give the table a decorative quality, while the geometric top reflects the architectural language of early 20th-century design.

The base is formed from four sweeping curved legs that rise inward from splayed feet to support the top, joined at the centre by a small rounded stretcher detail with visible brass screw heads. Its compact scale makes it well-suited as a lamp table, drinks table or decorative side table beside a chair or sofa. The combination of octagonal geometry, radial veneer work and arched support structure gives the piece a distinctive Art Deco character without excessive ornament, allowing it to sit comfortably with antique furniture, 1930s interiors or more eclectic 20th-century schemes.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco furniture from the 1930s is defined by geometric shapes, streamlined contours, and striking wood veneers. Occasional tables from this era often incorporate faceted tops, sweeping legs, and decorative sunburst or radial marquetry patterns.

Craftsmen typically utilised high-grade timber frames layered with decorative wood veneers such as walnut, mahogany, satinwood, or burr maple. Metal fittings or accent collars in brass or chrome were also frequently integrated into the leg supports.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-matched veneer panels, natural age-related patination, and period-specific joinery beneath the surface. Original items display subtle irregularities in hand-applied finishes rather than modern synthetic coatings.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa to function as a drink stand or lamp base. Its geometric silhouette acts as a sculptural focal point, pairing well with minimal modern upholstery or period-style seating.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent scratch build-up. Protect the veneer from moisture and direct sunlight, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood finish.
