Antique Military Campaign Chest in Camphorwood C.1850

19th century
Description

An antique campaign chest in camphorwood, circa 1850, with brass corner mounts, strapwork and carrying handles to the sides. The long rectangular form is constructed with visible dovetailed corners and a hinged lid, opening to reveal a clean, pale timber interior with panelled lid construction and a retaining chain. The exterior shows warm golden-brown colour, pronounced grain and age-related marks, giving the chest a practical travel-worn character.

Originally made for transport and secure storage, the chest retains a recessed brass handle to the front, brass lock plate and protective metal mounts to the corners and edges. Its generous interior makes it useful today for blankets, linens, documents or general household storage, while the low form also allows it to work as a coffee table or end-of-bed chest. The combination of camphorwood, brass hardware and robust campaign construction gives the piece a clear 19th-century military furniture character, suited to both traditional and more layered interiors.

Age: Circa 1850

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military campaign furniture was designed for transport by armed forces during overseas deployments, originating primarily in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These pieces were constructed to withstand travel, incorporating flush-fitting hardware and robust timbers.

Campaign trunks were typically constructed from durable, insect-resistant woods such as camphorwood, teak, or mahogany. Hardware was constructed from brass, including corner plates, straps, and flush-mounted handles designed to sit flat during transit.

Authentic pieces feature recessed or flush-fitted brass hardware designed to prevent snagging during transport, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and heavy brass corner straps. Camphorwood trunks often retain a distinct aromatic aroma when opened.

A campaign trunk functions effectively as a central coffee table in a living room or positioned at the foot of a bed for textile storage. The combination of timber and brass adds texture and structure to modern living spaces.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking or timber movement.
