Georgian Chest of Drawers in Mahogany with Bracket Feet C.1830

19th century
Description

An antique mahogany chest of drawers with a broad rectangular form, bracket feet and a practical seven-drawer arrangement. The front is configured with one long upper drawer above three rows of smaller paired drawers, each fitted with brass swan-neck handles and shaped circular backplates. The mahogany has a deep reddish-brown tone with visible grain, polished surface variation and age-related marks, giving the piece a well-established character without obscuring its useful proportions.

The drawer fronts are framed by fine moulded edges, with keyholes to each section and a simple moulded top above. The shaped bracket feet and low apron give the chest a grounded stance, while the multiple drawer sizes make it particularly useful for clothing, linens, documents or household storage. Its width would suit a bedroom, hallway, landing or sitting room, offering the storage capacity of a larger antique chest while retaining a restrained, adaptable form for interiors mixing antique and 20th-century furniture.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian chests of drawers, produced between 1714 and 1837, are characterised by balanced proportions, simple moulding, and high-quality timber construction. Common physical features include mahogany or walnut veneers, bracket feet, and brass swan-neck drop handles.

Furniture from around 1830 predominantly utilised solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers laid over oak or pine carcases. Drawer hardware typically comprised cast brass drop handles, brass escutcheons, and steel mortise locks.

Authentic pieces display hand-dovetailed drawer joints, oak or pine secondary woods with hand-sawn marks, and natural patination. Original brass handles frequently leave faint outline impression marks or patinated ghosting on the timber surface.

A Georgian mahogany chest serves as a functional focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or reception room. Pairing dark timber tones with neutral wall palettes or contemporary minimalist accessories creates a balanced aesthetic scheme.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax twice yearly. Position the item away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage and finish fading.
