Small Georgian Bachelor's Chest of Drawers in Mahogany with Original Handles Bracket Feet

19th century
Description

An antique mahogany bachelor’s chest with compact proportions, bracket feet and a practical two-over-three drawer arrangement. The front is fitted with two short upper drawers above three long drawers, each retaining ornate brass plate handles with shaped backplates and drop pulls. The mahogany has a deep reddish-brown tone with visible grain, polished surface variation and subtle wear consistent with age, giving the chest a quietly established character.

The drawers are framed by fine moulded edges, with pale timber interiors and traditional dovetail construction visible when open. A moulded top, plain side panels and shaped bracket feet keep the form restrained, while the original-style brass fittings add decorative detail without overwhelming the clean case design. Its modest scale makes it well suited to bedroom storage, a hallway, landing or sitting room, offering the usefulness of a classic antique chest of drawers within both traditional interiors and more layered schemes combining antique and 20th-century furniture.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian bachelors chest is a compact piece of case furniture developed in 18th-century Britain, characterised by low proportions, multiple drawer arrangements, and occasionally a fold-over top intended for writing or dressing.

Georgian chests were predominantly crafted from solid and veneered mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak or pine linings, and cast brass handles with protective escutcheons.

Authentic Georgian furniture exhibits hand-sawn wood marks on back panels, slightly irregular hand-cut dovetails, original cast brass fittings, and natural wood shrinkage consistent with two centuries of aging.

Position a Georgian chest in a hallway or bedroom alcove, pairing rich timber tones with contemporary artwork, minimalist ceramic lamps, or modern decorative accents to create visual balance.

Maintain timber finishes by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish annually, while avoiding proximity to central heating radiators and direct sunlight.
