Rare Early 18th Century Louis Xv Provincial Burr Elm Mazarin Commode

18th century
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

A rare early 18th Century Louis XV provincial burr elm shaped front mazarin commode of excellent colour and proportions.

French Circa 1710.

Constructed with thick cuts of tight burr elm dowelled to the carcass, the rectangular burr elm panelled top with a fruitwood banding, over three inverted breakfront drawers retaining their original handles and escutcheons, flanked by shaped front styles terminating on splay feet. The sides panelled with a shaped moulding.

Please note it is very rare to find a commode of this form being in burr elm. These commodes are called Mazarin because of the shaped front styles leading down to the feet, a design first introduced in the Louis XIV period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Louis XV Mazarin commode, originating in 18th-century France, is characterised by its structured form transitioning into delicate rococo curves, featuring decorative brass escutcheons and multiple long drawers.

French Provincial craftsmen primarily utilised native hardwoods such as burr elm, walnut, oak, and fruitwoods, complemented by cast brass or bronzed hardware for drawer pulls and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joinery, uneven timber shrinkage on the back panels, and aged patination on metal mountings.

Position the chest in an entryway, living area, or bedroom as a focal anchor, pairing its intricate wood grain with neutral-toned ceramics or contemporary artwork.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, applying high-quality beeswax sparingly once or twice a year, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight or radiators.
