Large Flame Mahogany Breakfront Open Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

fine quality Edwardian flame mahogany breakfront open bookcase, dating to circa 1910. Constructed in three sections beneath a finely figured flame mahogany frieze, the bookcase displays particularly attractive timber throughout, with rich colour and striking grain patterns across the breakfront top, frieze and sides.

The breakfront form gives the piece a distinguished architectural appearance, with the projecting central section flanked by slightly recessed outer compartments. The arrangement provides a practical combination of shelving, with adjustable shelves throughout allowing flexibility for books of varying sizes or decorative displays. Elegant reeded uprights divide the sections, whilst finely carved floral corner blocks add a restrained decorative detail typical of the Edwardian period.

Raised on slender square tapering legs terminating in spade feet.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A breakfront bookcase features a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side wings, creating a stepped facade characteristic of 18th and 19th-century British cabinetry.

High-grade mahogany, particularly flame mahogany veneers with distinct feathered grain patterns, was preferred alongside solid oak or pine secondary woods for interior framing and shelving.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional french polish finishes, hand-carved architectural detailing such as fluted pilasters or carved rosettes, and natural age-related patination.

A low breakfront bookcase works exceptionally well along a main wall as a display surface for artwork and ceramics, while the open shelves provide accessible storage for books, creating a tailored focal point.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to radiators to prevent timber splitting or finish fading.
