Victorian Mahogany Gentleman's Vanity Box

19th century
Description

A fine example of a Victorian gentleman's vanity box, dating from the mid to late 19th Century. The mahogany box has a brass escutcheon and matching cartouche engraved C.R.D. and it comes with its original working key.

Inside the box the lid is lined with black leather and there is a sprung loaded mirror below the lid. It has two glass vanity pots, a lidded storage compartment and a leather cover with sections for holding brushes, pencils and other items which lifts out to reveal a lower storage compartment.

It is in good condition for its age and has been very well made and well looked after. There are some minor signs of age and use, some light wear to the leather interior but overall the piece displays beautifully. It has been cleaned and polished and it is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the 19th century, a gentlemans vanity or dressing box was a portable wooden case designed to hold personal grooming items, shaving equipment, and toiletries securely during travel.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, featuring brass hinges and lock plates, dark leather linings, and fitted glass jars topped with silver or silver-plated lids.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, solid brass hardware with working lock mechanisms, leather-embossed interior linings, and hand-blown glass containers fitted precisely into bespoke compartments.

Displaying the box in an open position on an office desk, console table, or dressing area showcases its fitted interior, while keeping it closed provides a polished, historic accent on a bookshelf.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, clean glass jars with a damp cloth, polish metal fittings carefully, and treat the wood exterior periodically with natural beeswax polish.
