ABOUT

Mary Magdalene, celebrated as "the Penitent," is a prominent figure in Christian tradition. While the New Testament describes her primarily as a key follower of Jesus and the first witness to his resurrection, she is widely revered as the ultimate symbol of repentance, grace, and redemption

The identity of the "penitent" Magdalene is a rich mixture of biblical narrative and centuries of church tradition:

The canonical gospels introduce Mary Magdalene as a woman from whom Jesus drove out seven demons. She faithfully traveled with Jesus, provided for his ministry, witnessed the crucifixion, and famously encountered the risen Christ at the empty tomb

Brief Description

Fine Large Victorian Oleograph on canvas of young girl in angelic pose with hands clasped together.

Presented in a lovely detailed swept plaster cast gilt fame and protected under the original old glass.

An Oleograph is a method of mounting an high quality coloured lithograph or print onto real canvas,to produce a visual finish very similar to a genuine oil painting.

The detail in the lithograph is very fine and still retains sharp colours and is full of character..

The image is sharper than shown, but taking pictures through glass causes a loss of quality.

Frame

This is an original swept Victorian frame in good order and beautifully gilded and would itself be worth hundreds to buy separately today.

Condition

The Frame and the Oileograph are both in perfect condition and excellent for their age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An oleograph is a colour lithograph printed in oil colours to closely imitate the texture, finish, and appearance of an original oil painting, a technique widely popular during the late 19th century.

They were created using multiple lithographic stones, transferring successive layers of oil-based inks onto paper or canvas to build up rich tones, before being mounted and framed.

Authentic period oleographs exhibit smooth colour blending rather than modern halftone dot matrices under magnification, along with age-appropriate canvas backing, wood panel support, or natural surface craquelure.

A large gilt-framed portrait serves as a strong focal point when displayed above a modern fireplace mantelpiece or minimalist sideboard, creating visual contrast between historic depth and contemporary design.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture, dust the gilded frame carefully with a dry soft brush, and clean the glass gently without applying liquid directly to the frame moulding.
