Antique Omega Gun Metal Pocket Watch, Limerick

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Omega gun metal pocket watch, Limerick.

The watch has a stem-winding movement, signed Omega, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has a little scratching to the edge.

The watch measures 46mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gun metal. It is in good condition with just general light surface marking which is quite usual for gun metal cases. The inside of the hinged case back is signed with the Omega logo.

The acrylic lens is in good condition (some natural white reflection showing in the photos).

The dial is signed with the name of the original retailers, C Cromer, Limerick. Conrad Cromer was listed as both a watch maker and jeweller who traded from 18 George Street, Limerick.

The dial is in lovely condition, just a minor scratch on the subsidiary seconds dial. Original hands.

The watch comes with a single chain with graduated links, which picks up the gold coloured highlights on the watch.

The watch and chain come in a vintage presentation box from the high end watchmaker and jeweller, Sir John Bennett.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gunmetal pocket watch is a timepiece with a case constructed from treated steel or alloy, giving it a characteristic dark grey or blued matte finish. Popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, gunmetal offered a durable and non-reflective alternative to precious metals like silver or gold.

Pocket watches from this era typically feature mechanical lever movements, porcelain enamel dials, hand-painted Roman or Arabic numerals, and glass crystals. Cases were cast and machined from gold, silver, brass, or base metals like gunmetal, often fitted with a top loop for attaching an Albert chain.

Authentic pieces generally display maker or retailer marks on the dial and movement, along with serial numbers or hallmarks stamped inside the case back. Genuine dials are typically made of fired enamel on copper rather than printed card or plastic.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed under a glass dome cloche on a dedicated pocket watch stand or kept within its open presentation case on a desk or bookshelf. Staging the timepiece alongside vintage horological tools or desk accessories adds historical context.

A mechanical timepiece should be kept dry, free from dust, and away from strong magnetic fields. It should be serviced by a qualified horologist every three to five years to clean the movement and apply fresh clock oil to reduce gear friction.
