A Wonderful Young Bronze Stag C1925

1900 - 1920
Description

Young Bronze Stag, circa 1925

A finely cast bronze sculpture depicting a young stag standing in an alert, confident pose upon an oval integral base. The animal is rendered with impressive anatomical detail, the sculptor skillfully capturing the strength of the neck, shoulders, and hindquarters while maintaining a graceful, natural stance. The branching antlers frame the head attractively and contribute to the sculpture’s commanding presence.

The bronze has been professionally waxed and polished, enhancing the rich dark patina and accentuating the surface modeling, muscle definition, and textural detail throughout. The combination of elegant form and refined finish gives the piece considerable decorative appeal.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Animalier movement emerged in 19th-century France and continued into the early 20th century, focusing on the realistic depiction of animals in bronze. Sculptors studied anatomy and natural movement to capture wildlife with anatomical accuracy, turning animal portraiture into a recognised genre of fine art.

Most bronzes from this era were produced using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method. Molten bronze was poured into moulds, allowed to cool, and then hand-chased to refine surface details before a chemically applied patina was added.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit significant weight, hand-chased surface details, and natural wear to the patina around raised areas. Look for foundry marks, maker signatures, or casting seams beneath the base that indicate traditional manufacturing techniques rather than modern resin or cold-cast reproductions.

Place the sculpture on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a bookshelf as a focal accent. The dark tone of patinated bronze creates strong visual contrast when set against lighter stone surfaces, painted woodwork, or natural timber furniture.

Dust the figure regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate areas. To protect the original patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently once dry, avoiding chemical polishes or abrasive cleansers.
