A Victorian Sterling Silver & Painted Enamel Yellow & White Rose Vesta Case – William Neale, Chester 1888

19th century
Description

Victorian Sterling Silver & Painted Enamel Yellow & White Rose Vesta Case – William Neale, Chester 1888

An exceptional late-Victorian sterling silver novelty vesta case, exhibiting the fine craftsmanship of the renowned silversmith William Neale.

Of elegant rectangular form with softened, rounded corners, the front of the pocket match safe features a beautifully detailed, hand-painted enamel depiction of a blooming white rose nestled among smaller secondary buds, autumnal leaves, and thorns. The reverse is finely engraved with crisp contemporary initials JDF in an elegant flowing script.

The case opens on a sturdy, tight hinge to reveal a clean interior, with the bezel clearly stamped for the prestigious London luxury retailer A. Barrett, 63, 64 Piccadilly. Complete with its original suspension ring at the top and a corrugated friction strike plate built into the base, this piece represents the pinnacle of late 19th-century luxury novelty silver.

The enamel remains vibrant and remarkably intact, the hinge operates smoothly and snaps shut securely, and the full British hallmarks are deeply struck and legible.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vesta case, also known as a match safe, is a small portable container produced primarily in the nineteenth century to store friction matches and protect them from moisture.

Antique vesta cases were typically crafted from sterling silver, brass, nickel, or vulcanite, and were frequently embellished with hand-painted vitreous enamel, engine turning, or engraving.

Authentic sterling silver examples display official assay office hallmarks, a makers mark, and a date letter, alongside a textured match-striking surface usually located along the bottom edge.

These small silver items can be displayed inside velvet-lined shadow boxes, arranged on a decorative tray atop a mantelpiece, or positioned alongside books on a shelf.

Gently clean the silver using a soft dry microfibre cloth, taking care to avoid harsh liquid chemical polishes or water submersion that could damage delicate hand-painted enamel.
