19th Oil on Board Under Glass Original Frame.

-

This portrait depicts a Coldstream Guardsman a ( private ) buttons in two's and Garter star on neck collar with Gold Rose Shoulder epaulet insignia ( not officer star )

This style of uniform and insignia was introduced after the Battle of Waterloo and is still in use by the Regiment today.

Officers and senior NCO's have Full Gold Neck Collars and red sash.

The absence of a Brigade of Guards Shoulder flash, introduced after the Boar War, certainly supports the notion that it is 19thc.

A finely painted oil portrait on artists board of a British Guardsman wearing his Redcoat uniform.

The portrait is finely detailed and an accurate representation set with a gilt oval freight and within the original Victorian frame under glass.

The gilt border has a few marks and the frame has had good restorations in the past, otherwise all in respectable order for the age.

Please note there are slight reflections seen on the portraits due to being glazed.

Condition :

Plaster frame moulding has had recent repairs down the right hand margin, and now looks ok.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century military portraiture captured British army officers and guardsmen in regimental uniform, documenting ranks, medals, and decorative tunics with technical accuracy to honour military service and lineage.

These artworks were executed using oil paints on linen canvas or wooden panels, mounted behind glass or presented within hand-carved gilded wooden frames with plaster moulding.

Authentic pieces display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, period-accurate regimental uniform details such as collar insignia, and traditional framing techniques with wooden backing boards.

Position the portrait as a focal piece in a study, library, or hallway, contrasting the formal historical subject with modern muted wall tones or pairing it with dark timber furniture.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting the gilt frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush without applying liquid cleaners to the painted surface.
