Description

A rare 18th century chest of drawers in beautifully figured elm, the well patinated single piece top above two short and three long drawers, the whole raised on large, shaped bracket feet. This is a country made chest of drawers constructed by a local craftsmen from locally sourced elm. This chest represents the vernacular nature of provincial manufacturing in England in the 18th century beautifully. While the chest displays the same features used on the more formal examples made by the leading cabinet makers of the time, it has an honesty and innocence that is rare to find. The person who made this chest selected beautifully figured planks of elm to reflect the natural world around him into the home. During its lifetime, the natural build up of patination has elevated the colour and depth of the timber to its current state. A delightful chest that would sit equally well in a West country farm house or a London town house.
