An unusual 19th century Louis XV style canape of small proportions, the shaped and finely carved frame raised on elegant cabriole legs. During the late 19th century in France there was a revival in fashion for pieces of seat furniture that more than referenced their earlier, 18th century counterparts. No longer were the sophisticated, flowing, carved lines reserved solely for the royal households or elite homes. Pieces like this had become more accessible to the public through more organised manufacturing. By this time, almost one hundred years after the French revolution, the wider population developed a desire to be able to enjoy the same comfort and sophistication of interior furnishings that had previously been associated with the opulence of the aristocracy.
