FAQs

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Japanese potters produced ceramic vessels specifically fitted with metal mounts for the Western market to serve as tea table biscuit barrels.

These items are constructed from hard-paste porcelain decorated with underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamels, predominantly in iron-red and orange hues with gilded accents. The rims, lids, and swing handles are typically made from silver plate, electroplated nickel silver, or nickel-plated brass.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic hand-painted decoration combining cobalt blue underglaze with rich red and green enamels. The porcelain base often displays slight glaze irregularities or unglazed foot rims showing greyish-white clay, alongside age-appropriate wear on the metal mounts.

Place the piece on a sideboard, dresser top, or open shelving to introduce traditional pattern and colour. It works well displayed alongside plain glass or natural timber to highlight its detailed surface ornamentation.

Clean the porcelain surface gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasives or immersion that could loosen metal fittings. Silver-plated mounts should be wiped carefully with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent moisture damage to the glaze joints.
