The table seats up to six people and is very heavy and robust.
This hugely popular ‘trick-taking’ card game was often accompanied by substantial gambling.
The game originated in France and in the 18thand 19th centuries was so popular in high society and the middle classes that it gave rise to the invention of special ‘tilting’ tables such as this on which to play it.
These tables always had a tilt top so that they could be put to one side of the parlour until the game could be played when your guests arrived. The tables were also very heavy, level and solid.
Because the parlour was the room in which visitors were always entertained, this room would contain the most impressive pieces of furniture that a family could afford and the Lanterloo table would be amongst most impressive and expensive piece of furniture because your guests would sit comfortably at the table for hours to play the game.
In the late 1800s the game lost its popularity and it is odd to think that almost every British person would have known this game by heart for three centuries and now very few people would know how to play ‘Loo’ without looking up the rules!
This table is a really lovely high quality example and a striking piece of furniture designed to impress and as a statement piece demonstrating the owners wealth and sophistication.
The table is very solid and sits flat and level without any movement. The well turned column with a coromandel dressed bed with original brass latch fittings and original brass casters and set on acanthus hand carved scrolling feet.
No worm, all of the coromandel veneers are original and are in excellent condition.
There is a small loss to the bottom of one scrolled foot (not affecting structure or use) and a couple of very fine and old shakes to the bulb of the column – again completely stable and solid and not visible at all unless the table top is tilted.
A really beautiful early Victorian table that will look fantastic as a dining table.

Diameter is 49 inches, height from floor to top of table is 29 inches.
Height from floor to lowest edge of apron is 26 inches and height when tilted is 59 inches.
