Tasteful Victorian Three Hoop Double Bed

19th century
Sold by Bedsteads
Description

* Reduced to reflect 20% Sale on our own Website *

This very attractive three hoop bed, named so because of the three arching hoops which are the main feature of this bed’s shaping, is a very lovely bed indeed. Very solid and sturdy, like all of our antiques, and very pretty. IT has well shaped and good condition castings, featuring a clover shape in the middle of them. All in good detail. The head and foot have particularly nice ironwork around the central plaque

Fully restored to be sturdy, practical and beautiful. Whole frame cleaned, restored and tested for durability. All joints checked for secure fit. Shot blasted and primed prior to hand paint finish in Little Greene’s Olive Oil, Neptune’s Driftwood, and a custom colour wash, lightly dark waxed over to protect, give a soft sheen and some tonal variation. All of our beds can be re-painted in any colour of your choosing. Please contact us for more information.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian iron bedsteads became popular during the mid-to-late nineteenth century following industrial advancements in cast and wrought iron manufacturing. Characterised by decorative arched hoops, spindles, and central medallions, these frames were produced to replace wooden bedsteads for improved hygiene and durability.

These bed frames were typically constructed from hollow wrought iron tubing reinforced with solid cast iron decorative joints, collars, and central medallions. Dovetail corner lugs on side rails were cast directly onto the frame joints to securely lock the structure together.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature heavy cast iron corner joints with matching cast iron dovetail connectors on the side rails. Original frames also display hand-finished casting seams, poured iron decorative details, and uneven surface texture from period manufacturing techniques.

A painted iron bedstead pairs well with natural textiles, such as washed linen bedding and woollen throws, to balance the metal frame. Combining the item with timber side tables or understated contemporary furniture creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust the ironwork regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that may damage painted surfaces. Keep the frame in a dry indoor environment to prevent oxidisation or rust on exposed metal areas.
