A fine 18th century English portrait attributed to the celebrated portrait artist Thomas Beach (1739-1806)The attractive young sitter is pictured half length within a sculpted cartouche with her body inclined to the left away, with her eyes averted away from the viewer, she appears lost in thought. Hannah wears the lavish froth, frills and pale shades which show the influence of Rococo style. She wears a pale silver silk gown with a loose pleated back of the French ‘Saque-back’ style. Also called a ‘Watteau Pleat’ – after the work of the famous Rococo master – the wide fold of fabric falling free from her shoulders can just be glimpsed. The lace that is just seen cascading from her cuff are termed ‘engageants’ and her ruched sleeves held in place by pearl drops. Her raven hair is curled and worn elegantly upwards and she is without jewellery save for a simple black ribbon worn at her elegant neck.
