Description

A fine Worcester porcelain basket with pierced walls and scalloped rim and decorated with the ever popular pine cone pattern. The rim and first section of the reticulation is prettily decorated with a diaper style and trailing vines. The outside of the basket is decorated with individually moulded daisy flowers applied at each intersection and around the rim, each picked out in blue. Hatched crescent mark to the base, c.1775.

It measures 22cm (8 5/8") wide and 5.5cm (2 1/4") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear. A superb example.

First Period Worcester porcelain refers to items manufactured by the Worcester Tonquin Factory between 1751 and 1783 under the direction of Dr John Wall. This era is characterised by soapstone soft-paste porcelain formulations, underglaze cobalt blue printing, and delicate hand-painted Chinoiserie or floral decoration.

These pieces were produced using soft-paste porcelain containing steatite (soapstone) to improve thermal shock resistance. The openwork rim was hand-cut using small punches while the clay body was in a leather-hard state before receiving underglaze transfer printing and a clear lead glaze.

Authentic First Period pieces typically exhibit a greenish-yellow or greyish glaze translucency when held up to a strong light source due to the soapstone content. Markings often include underglaze blue crescent marks, disguised square marks, or painter marks on the underside.
