This oak coffer has some design features that make it stand apart from standard models. It dates from 1650-1675,and has some classic Welsh design traits. The V-cut jack boot feet sides of the coffer that the Welsh used in furniture of 16th century design but continued to use up to 1675. By 1650 the plain front panel design stopped being used and the more decorative panels were being used, as is the case with this coffer . The top is a two plank top and has a scratch moulding to match the four scratch moulded panels; with the sides chip carved to prevent splitting. The interior has the classic candle box which is still there and untouched; unusually though there are shaped bracket feet tenoned into the front stile feet; this is a very rare and desirable feature. This was purchased from a 16th century Welsh cottage outside Caernarfon.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Welsh oak coffer is a regional wooden storage chest produced during the 17th century, characterised by joined panel construction, peg mortise-and-tenon frame joinery, and utilitarian proportions for domestic storage.

These coffers were crafted from local solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with hand-cut wooden dowels, featuring recessed timber panels set within heavy stiles and top rail frame elements.

Authentic period coffers display hand-paved surfaces, irregular wooden peg fixings, original iron loop or strap hinges, and deep oxidisation and patination across untouched timber surfaces.

An antique coffer functions effectively as a focal point in an entryway, placed at the foot of a bed for linen storage, or positioned in a living area as an anchor piece alongside contemporary textiles.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a thin coat of clear beeswax polish once or twice per year while avoiding direct heat sources that cause timber shrinkage.
