Early 20th Century Turkmen Chuval Cushion

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

An antique Turkmen chuval cushion, repurposed from a hand-woven tribal cargo bag (chuval) originally crafted by nomadic Turkmen weavers of Central Asia.

The face of the cushion features the iconic, highly structured geometric gul (tribal crest) medallions. These are intricately knotted in a classic colour palette of deep crimson, rich madder reds, jet black, and warm ivory, with subtle forest green accents. The top seam is bound with a heavy, hand-braided dark cord, preserving the utilitarian ruggedness of its original tribal form.

In nomadic life, chuvals were prized storage bags hung inside yurts to hold clothing and household treasures. The generous, wide proportions of this piece reflect that heritage perfectly, making it an incredibly impressive, large-scale bolster or floor cushion.

The cushion has been finished with a high-quality, complementary backing and generously stuffed with a luxurious, heavy wool interior insert.

Due to the bespoke manufacture of the piece, the cushion cover is not removable or washable. Dab clean recommended, with a warm rung out cloth.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval is a traditional large storage bag woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes in Central Asia, historically used to store household items and bedding inside tents or during transport.

These textiles are hand-woven using pure sheep wool for both the pile or flatweave face and the foundation threads, frequently dyed with traditional plant-derived colours.

Authentic pieces feature structured geometric tribal motifs known as guls, hand-spun wool fibres, subtle natural dye variations, and tight knotting techniques distinct to Central Asian weavers.

Position the cushion on neutral-toned upholstery, leather seating, or structured bedding to introduce architectural geometric patterns and warm rich tones into a room.

Vacuum gently using a suction attachment without a brush bar, address liquid spills immediately by blotting with a dry cloth, and utilise specialist rug dry cleaning for periodic maintenance.
