Folk Art Naive Primitive Painted Wooden Horse Sculpture

19th century
Description

A highly decorative and charming early 19th-century folk art wooden horse sculpture. This piece features a beautifully stylized, naive form with a wonderfully aged dark patina and a beautifully preserved silhouette.

Unlike many solid carvings of this era, the horse’s body is constructed with a hollow core, showcasing exceptional regional craftsmanship and historic construction techniques. Having small, elegant proportions, this striking primitive sculpture makes an outstanding decorative statement piece.

It is ideally suited for display on a console table, mantelpiece, or positioned as a focal point in front of a mirror.

Good antique condition with historic wear, it stands on its four legs with no need of a support.

Declaration

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Primitive or naive folk art sculptures are figurative works created by self-taught artisans, often prioritising utility or expression over strict anatomical proportion.

Craftsmen typically used locally sourced hardwoods or softwoods, shaped with hand tools and joined with wooden pegs or hand-forged nails before applying tempera or milk paints.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible hand-tool marks, uneven symmetry, natural wood shrinkage over time, and authentic surface wear on high-touch areas.

Displaying the object on a clean-lined modern console table, sideboard, or acrylic display stand creates a striking visual contrast between historic texture and contemporary surfaces.

Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, and keep the object away from direct sunlight or fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking and paint loss.
