19th Century Butler's Coopered Washing Tub or Oyster Bucket

19th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

A butler's coopered washing tub or oyster bucket

The oval coopered tub with inset handles to each side, unpolished, as used for washing glasses in the butler's pantry (the wood being more forgiving on the glasses than porcelain, butlers pantry's often had built in wooden sinks for the same purpose). Similar in form to an oyster bucket, this one as it is unpolished would work particularly well for oysters without concern to getting it wet.

English, mid 19th century

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coopered washing tub or oyster bucket is a open wooden vessel crafted using traditional barrel-making techniques. In 19th-century domestic and commercial settings, these were utilized by household staff for washing fine items or transporting seafood.

These vessels were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak or pine for the shaped vertical staves, held tightly together under tension by iron or wooden hoops.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-coopering, including minor variations in stave widths, hand-hammered metal hoops, shrinkage gaps from age, and natural surface patination from usage.

Coopered tubs serve as functional hearth stores for firewood, decorative planters, wine coolers for events, or architectural floor vessels in rustic and contemporary spaces.

Keep the item in a stable indoor climate to prevent excessive timber movement or stave separation. Wipe clean with a dry cloth and occasionally apply natural wax polish to protect the wood grain.
