Antique Stripped Pine Chest of Drawers

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming antique pine chest of drawers with a plank top and attractive warm colour throughout. The top is finished with a moulded rope twist cornice above an arrangement of two short over three long graduating drawers. Each drawer is fitted with decorative brass handles and escutcheons. The chest stands on a shaped apron base and features panelled sides. Recently refinished and finished with a fresh coat of natural wax which enhances the lovely grain and colour of the timber. The drawers run smoothly throughout. An attractive example.

There is surface wear in places including age-related marks, scratches, knocks and natural imperfections to the timber commensurate with age and use. During the nineteenth century, pine chests of drawers were widely manufactured across Britain and Europe for domestic utility. Originally painted or stained to imitate costlier timbers like mahogany, many of these utilitarian pieces were stripped in the late twentieth century to reveal the natural softwood grain.

Traditional pine chests were constructed from solid Scandinavian or European softwood, utilising hand-cut dovetail joints for drawer boxes and solid timber linings. Hardware generally consisted of brass drop handles or turned timber knobs, paired with brass escutcheons and internal mortise locks.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, variable drawer depths, and residual paint or stain in crevices. Shrinkage gaps in original tongue-and-groove backboards, as well as genuine wear around brass keyholes, also indicate period construction.
