Alexander Wellwood Rattray, Rsw Arsa Neac Oil Painting.

19th century
Description

Alexander Wellwood Rattray, RSW ARSA NEAC

(Scottish,1849-1902) OIl on Canvas

Alexander Wellwood Rattray, RSW ARSA NEAC (Scottish, 1849-1902). Figure walking amidst silver birches beside a loch, oil on canvas. Signed lower left, remains of artist's label verso 15½ x 23¼in. (39.5 x 59cm.)

Condition: In a 1950s gilt stepped frame with another sketched work of a loch landscape to canvas verso. Not relined, no evidence of retouching or restoration. A Very small hole with scuffed edges to canvas towards the top left corner. The area towards the top centre of canvas showing some craquelure. None elsewhere. The first part of the signature clear, the second half to right indistinct. Would benefit from a light clean.

A superb and most charming painting, very much in the style and palette of a French artist, Eugène Galien-Laloue.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish Impressionism emerged in the late 19th century, characterised by loose brushwork, atmospheric light, and naturalistic depictions of the Scottish countryside, lochs, and foliage.

Artists primarily utilised oil paint composed of ground natural pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto stretched linen canvas or wooden panels and sealed with natural resin varnish.

Authenticity is evaluated through period-appropriate craquelure patterns, artist signatures or monograms, society acronyms such as RSW or ARSA, original stretcher bars, and historic gallery labels on the reverse.

Traditional landscape paintings can be positioned above a sideboard or mantelpiece to create a balanced focal point, pairing earthy natural tones with muted wall colours and clean-lined furniture.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and high humidity, dusted occasionally with a soft dry brush, and restored only by professional conservators.
