Colourful Heriz Carpet, North-west Persia, Circa 1890, 3.06m X 2.32m

19th century
Description

The subtle differences between good antique Heriz carpets means that they can work in many types of settings. This lovely example from the late 19th century has the merit of a colourful palette with saturated natural dyes that gives it a very happy appearance that would light up any decorative setting. The terracotta background is matched by lovely abrashed light blues, greens, golds and a glowing sapphire blue which is seen predominantly in the main border and the central medallion. The classic anchor medallion design often seen on Heriz carpets is very well drawn with lots of space between the motifs so that it feels spacious. In addition, this carpet is an excellent size, a small carpet, which one does not come across in antique Persian carpets. Professionally cleaned, and with some minor restoration to the selvages and ends. Ready for immediate use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Heriz carpets originate from North-West Persia and are recognized by their bold, geometric designs, central medallion layouts, and durable construction.

These carpets are hand-knotted using a thick wool pile spun on a heavy cotton foundation, coloured using dyes derived from natural plants and minerals.

Authentic pieces feature angular medallion motifs, natural colour variations known as abrash, asymmetrical hand-tied knotting on the reverse, and structured geometric borders.

A Heriz carpet serves as a foundational textile to anchor a seating area, dining room, or library, contrasting well with both traditional timber furniture and contemporary minimalist schemes.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating beater bar, rotate the carpet annually to ensure balanced wear and sun exposure, and utilize professional specialist cleaners for deep washing.
