Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror was originally designed during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to be mounted on the wall space, or pier, between two windows. Their primary function was to bounce natural light deeper into grand reception rooms while providing decorative balance to symmetric window arrangements.

Traditional pier mirrors were constructed using a wooden core frame overlaid with gesso, a smooth plaster mixture. Decorative elements were carved or moulded, followed by the application of thin gold leaf through water or oil gilding, housing a reflective glass panel and often an inset painted oil canvas.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-carved wood beneath the gesso layer, subtle wear to the gold leaf showing red or gray bole underneath, original timber backboards, and natural oxidisation or dark spots on the silvering of the original glass panel.

Pier mirrors are frequently positioned in narrow hallways, between pairs of floor-to-ceiling windows, or positioned directly above a console table or mantelpiece to introduce visual height and depth to smaller modern architectural footprints.

Giltwood frames must be dusted gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber feather duster. Moisture, liquid cleaners, and commercial polishes should never be applied directly to gilded gesso, as water can dissolve the traditional glue binder and lift the gold leaf.
