A finely modelled pair of late 19th-century porcelain figural candlesticks, possibly produced by Sutherland & Sons of Longton, Staffordshire, and executed in the Neoclassical taste.
 
Each candlestick is formed as a seated draped female figure upon a circular stepped base enriched with gilt decoration. One figure embraces a stylised dolphin with gilt-highlighted scales, while the companion figure supports an urn-form candle sconce. Their idealised features, flowing drapery and mythological references reflect the continued popularity of Classical Revival design throughout the Victorian period.
 
One candlestick bears an impressed ''S&S'' mark together with the model number 159. This mark is possibly attributable to Sutherland & Sons, a Staffordshire manufacturer recorded at the Dresden Works, Longton, and known for producing decorative porcelain and earthenware during the second half of the 19th century.
