Late 19th Century Arts & Crafts 'Sussex' Fireside Armchair with Spindle Back & Rush Seat

An elegant and honest example of English Arts and Crafts craftsmanship, this country fireside elbow chair dates from circa 1890-1900. Closely following the influential "Sussex" style of rush-seated furniture popularized by Philip Webb and Morris & Co., this variant features a distinctively rare spindle backrest design composed of five slender, turned spindles set between simple horizontal rails.

Crafted primarily from ash/beech, the chair displays beautifully swept, slender out-scrolled arms supported by elegant turned uprights. The lower frame features traditional double stretchers on three sides, providing excellent stability while maintaining a lightweight, minimalist silhouette true to the Aesthetic movement.

The traditional envelope-weave rush seat remains firm and supportive. It exhibits honest age-related wear and fraying primarily along the front edge rail, which highlights its authentic history and rustic country charm.

A versatile, highly decorative accent piece that sits beautifully in modern, rustic, or period interiors alike.

The frame is structurally sound, stable, and strong with tight joints. The timber retains a beautiful colour and patina, showing only minor surface marks consistent with age and utility. The rush seat is firm and completely usable, but note that there is visible wear, fraying, and minor losses specifically concentrated along the front edge rail.
