Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique French birdcages and aviaries were popular decorative and functional items during the 19th and early 20th centuries, designed to house songbirds in residences, chateaux, or conservatories. They are characterised by intricate ironwork, architectural shapes such as domes or pavilions, and scrolling details.

Traditional French birdcages were constructed primarily using wrought iron, steel wire mesh, and occasionally timber bases. Many were finished with lead-free painted coats, which naturally oxidised and weathered over time to produce a layered patina.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-formed iron scrolls, hand-welded or riveted wire mesh joints, and natural paint degradation showing underlying metal oxidisation. Modern reproductions often display uniform machine welds, synthetic powder coatings, and lightweight alloy compositions.

In contemporary settings, large freestanding birdcages are frequently utilised as architectural display pieces, indoor plant stands, or terrariums within conservatories, dining spaces, and garden rooms. They add vertical interest and structure to empty corners or sunrooms.

Preservation requires keeping the metal dry to limit active rust progression while cleaning loose surface debris with a soft bristle brush. Microcrystalline wax can be applied sparingly over stable paint and oxidised iron to seal the surface against humidity without altering the original patina.
