Description

A very large English Delft charger, circa 1770, with a lobed rim edged in brown enamel, painted in blue in the Chinese style with a willow tree and various plants. Painter's tally mark verso.

Overall condition is good; losses and fritting to the rim are commensurate with age. Indistinct previous owner's label verso. Additionally, we have noted two small restored areas to the rim. Please see images for details.

An English Delft charger is a large tin-glazed earthenware platter produced in England during the 17th and 18th centuries. These items were decorated by hand with cobalt blue pigments, heavily influenced by imported Chinese Wanli and Kraak porcelain designs.

English Delftware was crafted from a porous earthenware clay body coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Cobalt oxide was painted directly onto the unfired glaze surface before undergoing a single high-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces feature a soft buff-coloured earthenware core visible at edge chips, known as fritting. Look for light glaze crazing, pinhole imperfections, hand-painted cobalt brushwork, and unglazed flat backs or reddish-lead glazes on the reverse.

Position the charger on a brass or clear acrylic plate stand atop a sideboard, dresser, or console table. Alternatively, mount it as part of a curated gallery wall alongside framed botanical prints or contemporary art.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking tin-glazed ceramics in water or placing them in humid conditions, as moisture can penetrate chips in the glaze and cause the porous earthenware body to degrade.
