Antique Georgian Leather-bound Casket / Chasse

19th century
Description

A most unusual Early 19th Century Antique Georgian Casket or Chasse, the latter term used to describe a medieval casket with sloping roofs like a house, from which the form of this piece is derived. Retaining its original iron staple fastening, the two brass hinges in good order, the leather covering decorated with brass studs, the top enhanced with four penwork images of soldiers. While its original purpose remains unclear, this interesting and attractive box with its red velvet lining was probably intended to sit upon the desk of a senior military officer. Believed to be either English or French, { We really can't decide, but as always, welcome constructive comment }.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian leather-bound casket is a small wooden storage chest dating from the 18th or early 19th century, covered in calfskin or hide and secured with iron or brass fitments. These boxes were primarily produced to secure personal documents, valuables, or writing implements during transport.

Constructed around a solid wooden core, these caskets were clad in wet leather that was stretched and secured using hand-forged brass or iron studs. Decorative motifs were often hand-tooled, engraved, or embossed into the surface alongside wrought iron catches and locks.

Authentic period pieces exhibit irregular, hand-cut brass studs, wrought iron lock mechanisms with hand-filed components, and natural wear patterns on the hide. The interior wooden structure generally shows hand-sawn timber marks and historical patination consistent with age.

Position the casket on a dark wood desk, sideboard, or within a styled bookcase alongside vintage books and brass objects. Its rich material palette introduces tactile warmth and historical structure to contemporary, traditional, or eclectic room schemes.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the leather from drying out and cracking. Apply specialized museum-grade leather wax periodically, and gently dust the metal studs using a soft-bristled brush to avoid disturbing oxidisation.
